9 esplanade Pierre Vidal-Naquet
75013 Paris

::.: At 5 pm: lecture/performance by SM and GT

“ La fabrique du bois ” is a dispositif that places aspects of our research on Deleuze's work with his students at the University of Vincennes during the 1970s in dialogue with the modus operandi of “ L'Abécédaire ”. Inspired by the principles that govern (or ungovern) Francis Ponge's La fabrique du pré (a text that attaches greater importance to the phases of preparation, elaboration and revision of a poem than to the finished product), we will engage the participants in a “virtual walk” around the Bois de Vincennes evoking through textual fragments, layered images and found sounds Deleuze’s radical working methods, his own endless preparation of lessons, the way he outlines a concept, seeds it, lets it lie, comes back to it by another route, adds something here or there, sees what happens when he places it in proximity to something of an entirely different nature, borrowed from another field of study. A google earth map of Vincennes will become an intensive cartography of multiplicities, a ground plan (or playground) for mnemonic conversational/conceptual itineraries and encounters.

One thing was certain, that the white kitten had nothing to do with it - it was the black kitten's fault entirely.

Walter Benjamin

PURGATOIRE EROICA
Haussmann ou les barricades

I.
Qu’il enchante l’oreille ou charme le regard ;

Walter Benjamin

“The events of 9/11 left a trail of smoke that still hasn’t dissipated from the atmosphere and that seems to have irrevocably ‘clouded’ our political vision. A state of affairs like a kind of weather that never passes, a media-borne overcast where smoke trails multiply and coalesce unnoticed and in relation to which we can have no privileged external perspective, no sure ground to stand on.
It was by chance that we discovered Goethe’s remarks on clouds – a friend gave Silvia the text saying it would help her sleep. In fact it did quite the opposite, it was a wake-up call that gave her the idea to make this cinétract. Like many of Goethe’s meteorological observations - inspired by Luke Howard’s pioneering classification of clouds - those of September 11, 1819 are remarkable for their precision, the careful mapping and sorting out of different types of weather phenomena, but above all their sense of measure, the calm certainty that after a storm the sky would clear. The sense of this film lies wholly in the open, multilayered disjunction between the events and times to which it refers. Goethe lived in an epoch when painters had begun to rethink how to paint the sky. Revolution was in the air.” (G.T.)

The Crystal Method

Harder to see in the original print than the Turin shroud, at the Cinémathèque Française a Philippe Garrel/Nico diptych, a double bill you never stop paying, La cicatrice intèrieure – Le berceau de crystal dedans/dehors, though impossible to tell which is which, firstly an inner scar that’s all exterior, bleached and blasted lunar desert, a far gone fata morgana taking flight into medieval dreams, ashen limbo of broken and bewildered light harrowed by asthmatic harmonium arpeggios, ’68 fall-out, half-life to live, white horse, black sheep, black ship: props for a Norse saga on acid, autistic meanderings of the eternal Garrelian deménage à trois, pale knight (Pierre Clementi), belle damnée (Nico), child in the ice manger ‘in naked honour clad’ clinging to a hank of fleece and Garrel infantile and deranged in red leather trousers, death valet parking for an end of the road movie, keeper of the car keys, flayer of the carcass…

And then, cut to interior, doll house anhedonia, the Langlois museum, in every dream palace a host of dead souls, Le berceau de crystal, study in the diminishing eternal returns of our lady of delay, Garrel dragging the Warhol factory aesthetic back through tallowy glooms of European art history – Caravaggio, Rembrandt, De la Tour, the paint it blacker school, counterpoint to an endless procession of plans fix, white powder light of Nico’s face, tarnished ambassadress of the opium room, reading, sleeping, smoking, reciting bad poetry, Holbein anamorphosis in reverse, a bloat of skull set adrift on the dark river of Ash Ra Tempel’s narcoleptic organ dirges, with Garrel the uninvited ghost, strung out in velvet like a rive gauche Joey Ramone. Sure, the drugs don’t work, but then they’re not supposed to: quite the opposite, they open us to the worklessness of pure time. Or whatever. While outside it’s 1975, sub-Dali dredgings of the psyche that launched a thousand prog-rock bands on the Lethe, the sun-dappled kitsch of jeunes filles en fleurs (Dominique Sanda, Tina Aumont) steeling themselves for the raincoat brigade, all this somehow redeemed (doomed) by Garrel’s camera, caught up in a struggle for crumbling beauty, a period to be revisited with terrible cold-eyed lucidity in J’entends plus la guitare.

Meanwhile Le berceau de crystal pre-emptively opts for the suicide solution, the Cinémathèque slowly empties and for the devout it’s back to the “dross” of youtube and 4th degeneration dvxes, circular ruin of a pixelated Hamlet endlessly treading his weary coil out on the silicon flats of laptop insomnia. Until the next outing, though you almost hope the shroud will be too stoned (immaculate) to show up.

Histoire(s) du cinema
(J.L.Godard)

histoire de la solitude
solitude de l'histoire

How naive we were, some years ago, trying to organise a retrospective of Histoire(s) du cinema (the première in Turin) for the North African housewives who had supposedly moved to the city... they speak French after all, and it's not true that J.L.G.'s films are obscure, or difficult: anyway, the result was a half-empty theatre for the first few episodes, basically us and a bunch of friends, before we too abandoned ship, fleeing to a Greek island. Perhaps it was one of those works whose destiny is to remain obscure, on the border of existence, surfacing here and there at remote festivals and in the odd smuggled, second-generation copy.

Until now, when it has become a freely available commodity, sleekly packaged and stacked up in Fnac alongside the latest episodes of Prison Break. And so we go back to the idea, though this time we take it to the Artist Residence at cittadellarte, perhaps a more suitable milieu - or so we imagine. The screening (1a + 1b) is due to take place at 6 but when we arrive, ten minutes late, the place is deserted, hardly anybody seems to be around... so we wait, helping ourselves to wine in the cafe, elaborating conspiracy theories over dinner with the few residents who haven't flown the coop. But the show will go on, we decide, late at night, though we end up having more fun afterwards, jamming till dawn with whatever is to hand - drums and other
half-improvised percussion, wine glasses, microphone feedback - eating melted ice cream from our cupped hands to celebrate a Palestinian birthday and sipping cheap "Nigerian" wine and vodka just arrived from St. Petersburg.

16 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE

A looped sequence featuring the mythical dance scene from Philippe Garrel’s film Les amants réguliers is projected in slow motion on a white sheet suspended from the ceiling in front of La Guillotine's’s emergency exit, to which an old 45 rpm record slowed down to 16 rpm, Georges Moustaki’s La Philosophie, provides a continual droning accompaniment.
The sound is further modified and degraded by live computer processing and the addition of a prepared electric guitar which repeats the melody of the song 16 times more slowly...

Sounding the 0rhizone

SOUNDING THE 0RHIZONE could be described as an attempt to translate 0rhizone, a hypermedia project we are currently working on, into purely sonic terms. 0rhizone takes as its starting point a conceptual ‘library of social transformation,’ (initially restricted to titles published after the fall of the Berlin Wall) subject of a 2004 exhibition, LetteraturediSvolta (Turning-point Literatures) organized by the Fondazione Pistoletto, and moves from the original theme of ‘writing transformation’ to that of ‘transforming writing and reading’ in terms of digital media, of which sound is an important component.
For this project we wanted to focus on the hypertextual/textural possibilities inherent in sound itself. Hypertext tends to be a highly image-driven medium, and the potential of sound not merely to evoke or narrate but as a means for conveying complex ideas and encouraging active, creative listening (through sampling, processing, layering and juxtaposition) is often neglected.
In SOUNDING THE 0RHIZONE we have tried to construct a mobile itinerary using a combination of music, sound art, field recordings, excerpts from film soundtracks, text fragments and personal narrative to explore some of the issues key to letterature di svolta (struggle, libraries, walls, rhizomes, ideas of community, the society of control, ruins, the open…)

Xpanding Orhizones

Presentation hypermedia project 0rhizone

0rhizone

0rhizone (zero(0)rhizone) is an ongoing hypermedia project which takes as its starting point the 30 books selected as seminal texts for social transformation for the Letterature di svolta/Living Library exhibition, initially held at Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto in 2004 and recently on show again at the Biella-based Art Foundation.

The name 0rhizone combines the conceptual/affective sprawl of Deleuzian rhizomatics with a quest for Tarkovsky’s elusive zone of memory and desire (passing on its way through Burroughs’ interzone of translation and hybridity). It implies a degree zero (0) of hypermedia “writing” and construction of subjectivity (alert but empty) navigating between the zeros and ones of binary digital logic, combing a deterritorialized, degraded signscape for traces of a lost or overlooked event-horizon. A “writing” through, with and against, rather than about, the effluvia of electronic media saturation.

He(u)retical Readings
The first stage of 0rhizone, 0rhizone #1, takes the form of a web-based hypertext, a he(u)retical development or dérive of the traditional philosophical essay but within a ‘smooth space’ where what is produced are sense and sensation (rather than meaning) and where critical interpretation gives way to the space of ‘not-knowing’ that lies or emerges in the interstices, silences and gaps between the planes of composition (text, music, images layered or juxtaposed).

0rhizone #1 errs around Mike Davis’s City of Quartz (one of the 30 “libri di svolta”) bringing into play our own experiences of ignoring, forgetting, pretending to have read and then finally reading the book, somewhat distractedly, intermittently, thinking about other things, other places along the way, frustrated and inspired in turn by a fundamental inability to think Los Angeles beyond the cliché of the Hollywood ‘sign’, and so resigning ourselves to a movie version of speculative reflection on some of Davis’s themes: lost utopias, film noir as a critique of corporate boosterism, the militarization of urban space, the city as war-zone, the politics of fear. Here the hypertext form serves more than anything else as a way to map a certain mood of reading and inhabiting Davis’s text and the city it attempts to anatomize.

A Living Library?
The 0rhizone project is not simply or not only a hypertext but aims to consider the practice of hypermedia in the broadest way possible, hopefully bringing into play the ‘readings’ of a wide range of international artists, writers, researchers, thinkers and diggers. Each of the 30 books will become the springboard or drawing board for an image, text, work, form of resistance, situation, event or non-event specific to a particular capture of its problematics and constituency of reception, for which the primary medium may be electronic, visual, aural, spatial, physical or a combination of these.

The “Living Library” from being an actualization will thus be reversed into the problematic field or constellation that constitutes it. What is a library and what is it for? What type of public domain does it inscribe in the social fabric (mechanisms of inclusion/exclusion, panopticon/invisibility, emancipation/ oppression)? What kind of readings, uses or performativities of texts does it foster or permit? As the project develops, the letterature di svolta website will continue to document, map and connect these diverse he(u)retical ‘readings’ that will ideally involve many different subjects (both individual and collective) and an array of institutional and non-institutional frameworks, as well as bringing into play numerous strategies and practices (from video and photography to text, hypertext, sound art, militant actions and relational art) in the hope of becoming an open platform for discussion, shared narrative, creative appropriation, molecular desire.

Live remixing/processing of the entire soundtracks of Michelangelo Antonioni’s "Trilogia dell'incomunicabilità" (comprising L'avventura, La notte and L'eclisse) while stills from the three films, capturing empty in-between moments where sense and emotion are suspended, are randomly projected and redoubled on the ceiling...

As the layered and manipulated sound conjure up impossible spectral dialogues across the three films, multiplying the disembodied voice of Monica Vitti in a hysterical fugue and foregrounding Antonioni’s pioneering use of modern ambient sounds (electric fans, fridge motors, helicopter rotor blades) to underscore the physical and existential disquiet of his characters, the public are invited to recline on an aseptic bed of white sheets and pillows covering most of the exhibition space and watch the frozen shards of images above as they flicker in and out of view like parings of long-dead stars.

IN TERZA VISIONE

::: la notte del 27 aprile 2007 @ CSOA askatasuna:::

Gus Van Sant's trilogy of death (Gerry, Elephant and Last Days) is simultaneously loop-projected for the entire night.

Viewed in this way, the films are no longer something to be watched more or less actively or passively, but become subjects in their own right, observing each other awry, each seeking a way out of the impasse of its internal limits, multiplying perplexities of image and gaze, repetitions of gesture and posture, adding further levels of suspension to an already dilated time-frame. The films’ varying durations, moreover, through a continual slippage of coincidence, lead to the multiplication and mutation of montage and sense effects.

During the installation the public can either sit or lie on a carpet and cushions (echoing the dominant chromatic schemes of the three films), or move freely around the space.
Removed from sequentiality, the trilogy/triptych becomes a transit zone, a space for chance encounters and mirrorings, a triple counterpoint of microtonal affects whose three narrative trajectories intersect while keeping their distance, the intimate distance that marks the singularity of Van Sant's cinema, fissure of an implacable political, aesthetic and existential disquiet.

ELEPHANT/GERRY/LAST DAYS

Looped and projected simultaneously on three screens Van Sant's trilogy, Gerry, Elephant and Last Days are no longer simply films the viewer watches but subjects that begin to watch one another, each seeking a way out of the impasse of its internal limit, multiplying perplexities of image and gaze, repetitions of gesture and posture, adding further levels of suspension to an already dilated time-frame. Thus the trilogy becomes a transit zone, a space for chance encounters and mirrorings, a triple counterpoint of microtonal affects whose three narrative trajectories intersect yet nonetheless keep their distance, the intimate distance that marks the singularity of Van Sant's cinema, fissure of a political, aesthetic and existential disquiet that cannot easily be assuaged.

UN ARTISTA DELLA FAME SI MANGIA LE PAROLE
(versione radiofonica)
