... quelques traces de notre balade à Paris ...

The Ballad of Désastronaute #1 (Noli me tangere)

PLACE@SPACE
(RE)SHAPING EVERYDAY LIFE

nowHere 16 March - 25 May

(vernissage 15.03.2008 ::: h.19.30-02.00)

“The events of 9/11 left a trail of smoke that still hasn’t dissipated from the atmosphere and that seems to have irrevocably ‘clouded’ our political vision. A state of affairs like a kind of weather that never passes, a media-borne overcast where smoke trails multiply and coalesce unnoticed and in relation to which we can have no privileged external perspective, no sure ground to stand on.
It was by chance that we discovered Goethe’s remarks on clouds – a friend gave Silvia the text saying it would help her sleep. In fact it did quite the opposite, it was a wake-up call that gave her the idea to make this cinétract. Like many of Goethe’s meteorological observations - inspired by Luke Howard’s pioneering classification of clouds - those of September 11, 1819 are remarkable for their precision, the careful mapping and sorting out of different types of weather phenomena, but above all their sense of measure, the calm certainty that after a storm the sky would clear. The sense of this film lies wholly in the open, multilayered disjunction between the events and times to which it refers. Goethe lived in an epoch when painters had begun to rethink how to paint the sky. Revolution was in the air.” (G.T.)

16 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE

A looped sequence featuring the mythical dance scene from Philippe Garrel’s film Les amants réguliers is projected in slow motion on a white sheet suspended from the ceiling in front of La Guillotine's’s emergency exit, to which an old 45 rpm record slowed down to 16 rpm, Georges Moustaki’s La Philosophie, provides a continual droning accompaniment.
The sound is further modified and degraded by live computer processing and the addition of a prepared electric guitar which repeats the melody of the song 16 times more slowly...

10 maggio: LA NOTTE
del terzo orecchio

Live remixing/processing of the entire soundtracks of Michelangelo Antonioni’s "Trilogia dell'incomunicabilità" (comprising L'avventura, La notte and L'eclisse) while stills from the three films, capturing empty in-between moments where sense and emotion are suspended, are randomly projected and redoubled on the ceiling...

As the layered and manipulated sound conjure up impossible spectral dialogues across the three films, multiplying the disembodied voice of Monica Vitti in a hysterical fugue and foregrounding Antonioni’s pioneering use of modern ambient sounds (electric fans, fridge motors, helicopter rotor blades) to underscore the physical and existential disquiet of his characters, the public are invited to recline on an aseptic bed of white sheets and pillows covering most of the exhibition space and watch the frozen shards of images above as they flicker in and out of view like parings of long-dead stars.
