Gus Van Sant's trilogy of death (Gerry, Elephant and Last Days) is simultaneously loop-projected for the entire night.
Viewed in this way, the films are no longer something to be watched more or less actively or passively, but become subjects in their own right, observing each other awry, each seeking a way out of the impasse of its internal limits, multiplying perplexities of image and gaze, repetitions of gesture and posture, adding further levels of suspension to an already dilated time-frame. The films’ varying durations, moreover, through a continual slippage of coincidence, lead to the multiplication and mutation of montage and sense effects.
During the installation the public can either sit or lie on a carpet and cushions (echoing the dominant chromatic schemes of the three films), or move freely around the space.
Removed from sequentiality, the trilogy/triptych becomes a transit zone, a space for chance encounters and mirrorings, a triple counterpoint of microtonal affects whose three narrative trajectories intersect while keeping their distance, the intimate distance that marks the singularity of Van Sant's cinema, fissure of an implacable political, aesthetic and existential disquiet.
